Walking 10,000 steps or more every single day for a whole month is a very impressive achievement for anyone (do try it!), and even more so for those with a very busy work schedule. Barchester staff will have been able to follow Julia’s daily vlogs on the intranet, which showed huge commitment and dedication to the challenge.
Julia and Sarah have raised a fantastic £1,550 for Barchester’s Charitable Foundation and Age UK. We would like to extend huge thanks to Julia and Sarah, and to everyone who has donated. This means a lot to our charity and to those we help during these very challenging times.
Sarah talked about her experience after the challenge:
"The challenge although difficult to fit in was so enjoyable and honestly, I didn’t know how much I needed it until I got into the swing of it, after a few days I really looked forward to the time! Over the past year playing a key role in the response to Covid-19 has certainly been difficult – I already had a hugely busy role and then Covid-19 came along. The challenge gave time to think and breathe and that was hugely valuable for wellbeing. We both felt really spurred on by all of the donations and our wonderful colleagues encouraging us. My little Cavapoo doggie Cooper was also completely thrilled! He thought it was Christmas everyday walking for so long."
"It was really tricky to fit in the time though. 10,000 steps a day is approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes so finding that time on top of providing support 7 days a week to all of our services and managing a large team as well as having a young family some days felt impossible! I feel so proud that during March I walked an average of 11,384 steps a day, some weeks at more than 88,000 steps in a week and even 24,000 in one day but at the moment am only getting to about half of my previous average - just under 7000 a day so definitely need to “step it up!” Thank you again for all of your support and kind donations. We know that the money will make a huge difference to the two charities we chose after a really challenging time. I would urge everyone to try and hit 5,000, 7,500 or even 10,000 steps a day – you will feel fantastic for it!"
"I would like to say a big thank you to all my colleagues and family for supporting me to complete the 'Step into Spring' challenge. Sarah and I initially thought we would be able to raise £500 for Age UK and the Barchester Foundation, we couldn’t of imagined that we would eventually raise over £1500!"
"Throughout the month of March I managed to walk over 10,000 steps every day and really felt the health and wellbeing benefits during that time. I hope you enjoyed my daily vlogs. Planning time out of each day to complete the steps was itself a challenge especially as the daylight hours were shorter. Since then I haven’t done so well but Sarah and I have set ourselves a new challenge to complete at least 5000 steps on a week day and 10,000 steps on one of the days at the weekend."
