Young adults learning independence skills

We funded FACE (Foundation for Active Community Engagement) to run independence skills sessions for 12 adults with learning disabilities and autistic spectrum conditions at their centre in Filton, near Bristol and including trips to surrounding areas.

The sessions covered money skills, cooking, using transport and gardening. The sessions worked on communication skills such as politeness, taking turns, listening, team work and negotiation skills, as well as the more practical skills. They also covered personal safety and community safety and even enjoyed a visit from a paramedic to teach the group some first aid. They also visited a launderette and a garden centre.

The young adults who attended the sessions have increased so much in confidence and are also reported by their parents/carers to be showing more willingness to do more for themselves at home.
