Moving Minds
/ April 2026Back in the summer of 2025 we awarded funding to Moving Minds Dance CIC. The grant from us funded the delivery of a six-week Steps After Stroke dance programme in York, supporting 14 people who had experienced a stroke to take part in inclusive, creative movement sessions designed to aid both physical and emotional recovery.
Moving Minds is a dance in health innovation community interest company. As a creative health organisation their aim is to provide dance and creative movement provision across several community venues for disabled people with chronic conditions and mental health issues.
Their feedback to us highlighted how each weekly session was carefully structured to support mobility, coordination, balance and confidence through guided dance activities. Participants explored rhythm, musicality and expressive movement at their own pace, with exercises adapted to a wide range of abilities—including seated options and supported standing work. Alongside the physical benefits, the sessions created a safe, welcoming space for social connection, reducing isolation and rebuilding a sense of identity beyond stroke.
They expressed how one particularly memorable moment came from a participant who arrived in the first session feeling hesitant and unsure, expressing that they “weren’t a dancer” and were worried about keeping up. By the final week, they were not only moving more freely and confidently, but also encouraging others, smiling throughout, and saying, “I didn’t think I’d feel like me again—but this has helped me find that.”
This programme didn’t just support rehabilitation—it restored confidence, sparked joy, and helped people reconnect with themselves and others in a way that feels both rare and deeply needed.
