Renewed independence for Alfie

/ August 2025

Back in February funding was awarded to Alfie.  Alfie has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a non-epileptic attack disorder and autistic spectrum disorder. He is unemployed and was very isolated as he was unable to get out of the house for spells of no more than an hour with his old wheelchair.

His old wheelchair was too heavy to self propel and he was therefore over reliant on carers, who can only come in for a maximum of an hour a time for times a day.

In Alfie's own words:

"Receiving my RGK OctaneFX wheelchair has been truly life-changing. The increased comfort, mobility, and independence it has given me have far exceeded my expectations.

This wheelchair has enabled me to walk my dog again — something I never thought I’d be able to do. As a result, I’ve been able to continue his assistance dog training, which will further support my independence and day-to-day confidence.

Since receiving the chair, I’ve also managed to get into university, which is a huge milestone for me. This opportunity greatly increases my chances of entering employment in the future and pursuing a meaningful career.

Another major improvement is that I can now enjoy family days out with little to no pain. Previously, outings would leave me exhausted or uncomfortable, but the OctaneFX has made these experiences possible and enjoyable again.

For the first time in years, I’m even looking at booking a holiday — something that simply wasn’t an option before. The chair’s foldable design and lightweight frame make it practical for travel, opening up opportunities I had long given up on.

I’m incredibly grateful for the difference it has made."
